Specific toxicology treatments and antidotes: cyproheptadine
| Specific toxicology treatments and antidotes: cyproheptadine |
Cyproheptadine is a sedating antihistamine that also acts as an antagonist at 5HT1a and 5HT2 receptors. These actions at 5HT receptors may be valuable in the symptomatic treatment of serotonin toxicity. Cyproheptadine is well absorbed orally and achieves a peak concentration after one to three hours. Due to cyproheptadine's anticholinergic effects, it should be avoided in patients at risk for urinary retention or with angle-closure glaucoma.
