Mental Disorders
Mental illness is defi ned as any disturbance of emotional equilibrium, as manifested in maladaptive behavior and impaired functioning of behavior or personality. Biochemical and structural abnormalities in the brain appear to contribute to these disorders. Some of these disorders have a genetic component. Stressors may play a role in the development of these types of illnesses. Psychotic illnesses include the more serious disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. Other common mental disorders including dementia and eating disorders as well as anxiety and sleep disorders , are less severe but nevertheless disruptive.
