Drugs used in inflammatory bowel disease: infliximab

Infliximab is a monoclonal antibody that acts against tumour necrosis factor alpha. It is used in moderate to severe and fistulising Crohn’s disease that is refractory to standard therapy. It is also used in moderately severe to severe active ulcerative colitis in patients who have had an inadequate response to conventional therapy. The initial dose is repeated after 2 weeks and then after 6 weeks, with subsequent doses every 8 weeks.
